Fine Print, chapter 3

Sigma rinsed himself off and threw on some simple clothes, white shirt, grey sweatpants. "I might as well check things out around here," he said to himself, "no point in being trapped in my room all night."
He started down the hallways, when he felt an arm go around him from each side.
"Hey pal!"
"Ahoy!"
He stopped and turned around to see the identical smiling faces of Nu and Mu, soldiers he met during basic training. His face lit up, and the three shared a hug.
"Guys!! You're back from Canada! How'd the mission go up there?"
Nu stepped forward. "It was bloody cold up there! Saw a seal though..."
Mu pulled him back and stood where he was. "It was so blobby!"
"Like a caterpillar dog!"
"You should have seen it!"
"Should have!"
Sigma chuckled, patting them both on the shoulders. "Alright, alright, calm down guys! I'm glad you're back, though. I just got back myself."
Mu's eyes were filled with awe. "You took out old Amir, didn'tcha?"
"But but but... that job's been in the pool for weeks! How'd ya get it?!"
"I hear he's in good with Delta..."
"Yeah? I hear he's banging his sister!"
The three shared a good laugh, but Sigma couldn't help blushing. They chatted for a brief while, sharing details about their jobs, when Mu caught a glimpse at Nu's watch.
"Well, we'd best be heading back to Delta, gotta report back to the head honcho!"
"Ahh... ok guys. Hey, welcome back. See ya round, ok?"
The two held a thumbs up accompanied by a big, hearty grin, speaking synonymously. "You got it!"
Sigma continued on his stroll. The base seemed empty tonight, just a blinding, void tube of white. Why Delta loves white so much, no one really knew, but it didn't seem to bother the rest of them.
The base was mostly quiet, save for the mess hall, which Sigma had been hoping to avoid. Too many people, too much to put up with after a tough mission. He decided to head back to his room. He jumped back onto his bed, staring at his phone.
1 missed call from: Sarah.
1 message from: Sarah.
He sighed and put the phone on his dresser. The door buzzed, which was good. He could use some company, he thought. The door slid open, and Theta was there with two bowls of chilli, one big, one small. "Hey. Hungry?"
"Famished. Come on in." He pulled out a stool from his desk and offered it to her."
"No thanks, let's sit on the floor."
"The floor? How come?"
She smiled to herself. "It'll be like an indoor picnic."
He grinned at her and took a seat across from her. "So... any particular reason you wanted to join me tonight?"
"Not really, you said you weren't in the mood to put up with everyone..." she took a small scoop of chilli and slurped it, still talking. "But I could tell you wanted some company." She handed him the big bowl, along with a spoon. "Here."
"Thanks. And yeah, it's good to have a friend you can just relax with, you know." He stared at his chilli, then looked up. "Have you heard any rumors about us being together?"
Theta choked a little, shocked. "What? No! Why?"
"Ahh... just something Nu said... I think. Maybe it was Mu. I don't know the difference sometimes, but they're both good pals."
"Well we're certainly NOT together, whatever it is that's in their heads. Besides, aren't you married?"
"Well... the divorce case is kind of in limbo right now. So at the moment, yes."
"Divorce? Did something go wrong with you and Sarah?"
"She got pregnant..."
"And you're leaving her for that? That's the worst-"
"...it isn't mine."
"...oh. I get it. I'm sorry."
"Heh, don't worry about it. Maybe it's a sign she deserves someone who can be there for her, you know?"
Theta stood up, walked over to him, and ruffled his hair. "Alright, enough of the downer shit, shut up and eat, man." He looked up at her, and they smiled at each other.
The two sat and talked. At this point, the chilli had been cold for about an hour. But, their conversation was just getting started.
